Coin collecting terms
These are a selection of terms used in the coin collecting world that may help your understanding of some of our web pages.
Obverse
Obverse is the main side of the coin. It is usually the side with the monarch or ruler's head, the 'heads' side of the coin. If there is no head it can refer to the side with the main design on it.
In the UK the obverse is the side with the Queen's or King's head on it.
Reverse
The reverse is the 'tails' side of the coin. It is the other side to the monarch or ruler's head.
