The Royal - Episode 6 - From This Day Forward

60s wedding on the ITV's the Royal

This series of the ITV's The Royal ends with  drama and new hope. There is a disaster which has everyone rushing to help. The future of the Royal still hangs in the balance and Dr Goodwin still has an important decision to make.

Alun (Andy Wear) and Stella (Natalie Anderson) are attending a wedding of friends. The reception is on Elsinby Pier (in reality Saltburn Pier). Everything is going well, there is a disco, the Beatles "She loves you" is on the record deck and the party is swinging.

Out in the waters below, an ageing trawler man is pushing himself too far. He has a heart attack and his son tries to revive him. The boat is out of control and is heading for the pier. Then disaster, the boat collides with the pier.  At first the pier seems to have survived the huge jolt and after the initial shock (and spilling of the champagne) the party continues

Then suddenly, the pier collapses, fire engines and ambulances are summoned and staff at the Royal prepare for the casualties. At the scene Drs Goodwin and Ormerod (Paul Fox and Robert Daws) have to make a terrible decision to amputate a young man's leg so that he can be pulled from the collapsing structure. Dr Goodwin saves a drowning man, the unfortunate groom, dragging him ashore and resuscitating him on the beach.

The hospital copes admirably with the disaster. Is Mr Carnegie (Robert Cavanagh) about to change his mind about its future?

The series ends with a leaving party for Dr Goodwin before he heads off for his sabbatical in Biafra. Ken (Michael Starke) has got the beers in and everyone seems happy. Dr Wetherill's (Amy Robbins) baby, seems to be arriving early. Her husband is called away from the celebrations to be at his wife's side. We will have to wait until next year to find out if mother and baby are well. The future of hospital, too, is uncertain. Watch this space.
