ITV - The Royal - The Cast

The Doctors

Dr Jeff Goodwin (Paul Fox)

Dr Jeff Goodwin joined the staff of The Royal after the untimely death of Dr David Cheriton (played by Juilian Ovenden) following a game of rugby. Jeff's career at the hospital gets off to a rather shaky start and some of the staff are disturbed by some of his maverick practices, which include sending a patient to a bonesetter.

Being a handsome young doctor, Jeff Goodwin soon sets the hearts of some of the female staff fluttering. His first date is with psychiatrist, Dr Lucy Klein (Polly Maberley), followed by dates with Student Nurse Samantha Beaumont (played by Anna Madley). Unfortunately, his romantic liaison with Chrissy Maynard, who was a friend of Lizzie's caused him a lot of trouble. After spending the night together, she turns up at the hospital as one of his patients, and of course, patient and doctor relationships are not permitted and this lands him in hot water. Things go from bad to worse, when Samantha Beaumont falls pregnant and undergoes a backstreet abortion, after she left the Royal, rumours start to fly as to whom the father is - is it Dr Goodwin?

Jeff becomes more disillusioned with his work at the Royal and decides to volunteer to work in Biafra, much to the consternation of his fellow doctors, especially the new doctor, Dr Joan Makori (played by Kananu Kirimi). However, Jeff will not be persuaded otherwise and leaves for pastures new.

In the current series, we see Jeff working in war-torn Biafra, where conditions are primitive and all drugs and medical supplies are scarce. He makes a promise to a dying woman to look after her young daughter and smuggles the child back to Yorkshire.

Paul was born in 1979 in Liverpool and attended the Cheshire School of Performing Arts. Prior to starring in the Royal, he was best known for the role of Paul Redman, Mike Baldwin's son with Maggie Dunlop (later Redman), in Coronation Street.
