What is retro modern style?

Retro is a decorating style that evokes a previous period. It is usually the 50s, 60s or 70s. More recently people are rediscovering the 80s.

You can go as far as you like with retro decor. Choose a particular period and create a room with that look, or pick out a few retro pieces to go in a modern room.

You can buy retro furniture, wallpaper, curtains, lamps, and accessories that could have comes straight from the 50s, 60s or 70s. You can even have a retro kitchen, complete with a retro fridge.

Can you mix periods?

Yes, certainly. The 50s was overtly modern and a good contemporary home rejected the past and embraced the new. However, in the second half of the 60s, people rediscovered nostalgia, originally for the Victorian period. In the seventies, Art Deco provided inspiration for some modern design and Art Deco pieces from the 20s and 30s were popular. The brown and cream look, popular in seventies' rooms, was derived from the 30s.

If you are going to mix and match, choose consecutive decades: 50s and 60s, or 60s and 70s. You will get pieces that look well together. Of course in a genuine 70s home there would often be pieces from the 60s.
