Arne Jacobsen's Egg Chair
Arne Jacobsen designed the Egg Chair for Fritz Hansen in 1958. The shape and style of the chair is so reminiscent of the late fifties and early sixties, when Scandinavian influence dominated ideas of good taste in design.
Arne Jacobsen was a Danish architect. His work dates back to the 30s and includes the Bellavista Apartments in Copenhagen (1933-4). They were designed in the Bauhaus influenced white concrete style, typical of high quality works of the period. In the UK Arne Jacobsen designed St Catherine's College, Oxford, which opened in 1963.
Arne Jacobsen is equally well known for his furniture designs. He produced some classic contemporary works in the early fifties. His Ant Chair has a bent plywood seat and slender metal legs.
Arne Jacobsen's style evolved throughout his lifetime. His Egg Chair of 1958 has a wonderful organic shape. The smooth shell like nature of the chair is beautiful. It is now recognised as a design classic.
In the sixties, the large swivel chair in leather or vinyl became a status symbol in British homes. Several British manufacturers designed their own version. The most well known was G-Plan's 'World's Most Comfortable Chair'.
The great thing about the Egg Chair is that you can still buy it today. It is still made by Fritz Hansen, the original manufacturer in Denmark.
