I'm trying to find out a little more information about a lovely retro dining table and chairs I picked up recently, and was wondering whether you could help.

I've searched eBay and other retro furniture sites, but can't find anything that's similar, so I don't know its age / designer / manufacturer etc. I've posted a few pics on my Flickr page, here...

It's got a circular smoked-glass top, with chrome legs. The four chairs are swivel chairs, with chrome legs and feet, shabby cream leather cushions and lovely blue / grey perspex backs. Very comfy! The glass sits on top of a small, black circular base, which (as you can see from the pics) doubles as a smaller table itself.

If anyone can shed any light on this, I'd be really grateful, thanks!!

Hi Tim,

I think these chairs probably date from the 70s. Smoked glass was certainly very fashionable for most of the decade. The chairs also have four legs which suggests they are not that recent. Modern swivel chairs have five legs, although I'm not sure when the safety regulation for this came in. Does anyone else know?

Yeah, I was thinking seventies myself, rather than sixties. But I'm intrigued as to whether it may be a piece of designer furniture, or just an example of mass-produced 70s dining room kit. Also, I'm not even sure what country it originates from. Bit of a mystery tour, this! I love it, though, so it doesn't really matter!

To start off I want you to look at your room that the old table is standing in or was standing on should I say and take a quick look or scan the room to see what type of style it is in. What are the most dominant colors and what type of design do you personally feel it has. You don't need to be pro at this because it is your own home so what you feel is best is actually best, someone else choosing for you is not the way to go because their taste might be different from yours. Since it is your own home I want you personally to select a feeling or a style that you get from your room.

After you have done that think of the different styles of dining room tables that exist, such as a rectangular one, round one, or some other custom design you might like. Think of the sizing of your room and choose the one that you think is best for that environment. After you have done that select your budget on how much you can afford. There are lots of great dining room tables that you can find for all types of prices, so don't get overwhelmed by anything. After you have done that you can start heading online, I go online because it gives me more options, and start choosing the types and brands you find. Start looking at as many sites as possible because you want as many different types to select from. After you found the best one ask around for opinions and see what they are saying about that model and brand to see if it gets any thumbs down. After that you are basically done, you go dig deeper and do some more searching but in basic that is about it. Good luck, and take your time!
