G-plan chair?

Hi,
I've been trying to identify a pair of chiars that I bought at a Bonhams auction a number of years ago which were described as Italian, late 50s. I've been looking at the G-plan info on the site and an now inclined to think that they are, in fact, G-plan. I've had them re-upholstered to match the original material which was black imitation leather but in rather tatty condition.
You can see a picture on my flickr photostream:

Any thoughts?

Regards,
John

Hi John,

Your chair looks remarkably similar to a G-Plan design from the early sixties. However, from the picture I don't think it is G-Plan.

The G-Plan chair in the catalogue I have has a brass frame. Brass was very popular in the UK as a finishing touch to late fifties and early sixties furniture. It was less so in Europe. In your picture it looks like a silver coloured frame.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if yours is an Italian design. G-Plan designs were influenced by Italy as well as by the Scandinavian style.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Retrowow,

Yes, my chair has a chrome frame. I see that Fears and Kahn currently have the G-plan chair for sale on their website (interesting to see their valuation!) and having checked the dimensions that they quote I can confirm that my chair is in fact a good bit larger.

I'm going to get my partner to order a copy of your book as it looks like a great resource.

Hi John,

The chair on the Fears and Kahn site is definitely the G-Plan chair. You can pay that kind of money for G-Plan these days, although it has to be in perfect condition. You might get something quite a bit cheaper on eBay.

I hope you enjoy the book.
